Welcome to Year 5!

This year promises to be an exciting and enriching journey as children build on their skills, confidence and independence across the curriculum. Pupils will enjoy exploring a wide range of engaging topics, developing their learning through practical activities, discussion and creative thinking. We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to supporting every child as they grow academically, socially and personally throughout Year 5.

History & Geography

In Geography, children will focus on Modern Day Greece by identifying human and physical characteristics. Children will learn to locate Greece on maps, identify it's capital city and surrounding seas, and use atlases and digital mapping skills. The topic develops an understanding of physical geography, such as climate, mountains and islands, as well as human geography, including settlements, land use and economic activities like tourism.

English

This term, the children will be studying the text 'Kai and the Monkey King', children will explore the story in depth to support their writing. They will learn how to write a diary entry by focusing on key features such as writing in the first person, using past tense, and expressing thoughts and feelings clearly. In line with the National Curriculum, pupils will practise using appropriate grammar and punctuation, including expanded noun phrases, time adverbials, and correct sentence punctuation, to structure their writing effectively and develop their authorial voice.

Maths

In mathematics, children will be developing their understanding of fractions alongside multiplication and division. They will learn to recognise, compare and represent fractions, as well as multiply and divide numbers using a range of strategies. In line with the National Curriculum, pupils will build fluency through practical activities, visual representations and problem-solving, helping them to apply their mathematical knowledge confidently and accurately in different contexts.

RE

In Religious Education, children will be exploring the theme of community, with a focus on charity and how the Church supports and serves others. In line with the RE curriculum, pupils will learn about Christian beliefs and teachings on helping those in need, including examples of charitable work carried out by churches locally and globally. Through discussion and reflection, children will develop understanding of values such as compassion, generosity and service, while making links between religious beliefs and how they are put into action within the community.

.

Science

In science, children will be studying properties and changes of materials. They will learn to identify and compare materials based on their properties, such as hardness, solubility, transparency and conductivity, and investigate how materials can change through processes like melting, freezing and dissolving. In line with the National Curriculum, pupils will carry out practical investigations, make observations, record results and use scientific vocabulary to explain whether changes are reversible or irreversible.

Homework

Homework will be given out on a Wednesday and should be completed by the following Wednesday. This will consist of reading, timetables and relevant activities (linking to what we have been learning). Maths will be set on MyMaths.com. Please message on Class Dojo if you're child has forgotten their username and password.

Please encourage your child to read at home as this is important to their overall progress. At home, children should be reading at least 3 times per week but it is beneficial for them to read as much as they can.
