Welcome to Year 5

A very warm welcome to Year 5! We are so excited for the year ahead and all the wonderful learning opportunities it will bring. Year 5 is an important year as the children become increasingly independent, confident and responsible learners.

We are looking forward to supporting them as they challenge themselves, discover new interests and continue to grow both academically and personally. We hope it will be a happy, exciting and memorable year for everyone, and we look forward to working closely with you along the way!

History & Geography

This term in Geography, Year 5 will explore modern Japan, discovering what life is like in this fascinating country. The children will investigate Japan’s human and physical geography, including its landscape, climate, population and settlements. They will also learn about earthquakes, why they occur and the impact they can have on people and places.

Children will develop their geographical skills by using maps, atlases, globes and digital mapping to locate Japan and identify its key features. They will also compare the human and physical geography of Japan and the UK, identifying similarities and differences and using geographical vocabulary to explain their findings.

In History, Year 5 will travel back in time to explore the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons and their impact on Britain. The children will investigate where the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons came from, why they came to Britain and how they lived, including their settlements, beliefs, jobs and way of life.

They will explore key events and historical figures, including the struggle for control of Britain and the significance of Alfred the Great. Children will develop their chronological understanding and learn to identify cause and consequence, make connections between historical events, compare different societies and use historical evidence to support their ideas.

Throughout the unit, pupils will work with a range of primary and secondary sources, learning to ask questions about the past, consider different interpretations and explain how we know about the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons today.

English

Maths

This term in Maths, the children will be developing their understanding of place value, addition and subtraction. They will begin by exploring numbers up to 1,000,000, learning to read, write, order and compare numbers and understanding the value of each digit.

The children will then build on their previous learning to add and subtract increasingly larger numbers, including numbers with more than four digits. They will use formal written methods, as well as mental strategies, to solve calculations accurately and efficiently. They will also develop their ability to estimate and check answers, identify mistakes and use their mathematical reasoning to explain how they have solved a problem.

Throughout the term, we will encourage the children to apply their skills to a range of problem-solving and reasoning activities, helping them to become confident, resilient mathematicians who can explain their thinking and choose appropriate methods to solve different problems.

RE

Science

This term in Science, Year 5 will be learning about Health and Life Cycles. The children will explore how our bodies grow and develop, and how we can keep ourselves healthy through exercise, nutrition and a balanced diet.

They will learn about the human life cycle, including the changes that occur during puberty and the different stages of development from birth to old age. They will also compare the life cycles of humans and other animals, developing their understanding of how living things reproduce and change over time.

Throughout the unit, children will develop their Year 5 scientific skills by asking questions, making predictions, carrying out investigations, recording and presenting data, identifying patterns and using evidence to explain their findings. They will also learn to use appropriate scientific vocabulary when discussing health, growth, reproduction and development.

Homework

Homework will be given out on a Wednesday and should be completed by the following Wednesday. This will consist of reading, timetables and relevant activities (linking to what we have been learning). Maths will be set on MyMaths.com. Please message on Class Dojo if you're child has forgotten their username and password. 

Please encourage your child to read at home as this is important to their overall progress. At home, children should be reading at least 3 times per week but it is beneficial for them to read as much as they can.

Important Information

P.E- The children will have P.E on a Wednesday each week. Please make sure that your child wears their P.E kit on this day.

Asthma inhalers/medication must be handed in to the office with the appropriate paper work and will be administered in class as necessary. You will be informed if your child has used their inhaler during the day.
